Orthorexia Nervosa
For my masters project at Columbia I wrote about the eating disorder orthorexia nervosa, the unhealthy obsession with healthy eating. It was published this week on Health.com. Naturally I spent a lot of time editing this story while eating Oreo cookie cake at the Cake Shop in the Lower East Side. An excerpt: Alena’s obsession with healthy eating started in 12th grade, when she found...

Jew Food Plus Some Pig
Jew food is so beautiful. Gothamist writes about the Jew food renaissance with chef Zach Kutsher. His restaurant sounds magical. A lovely quote from the article: “our gefilte fish is…made with wild halibut and a beet and horseradish tartare. I love our Romanian steak, which is a prime skirt steak with caramelized onions and our wild mushroom knish is amazing. Our roast chicken I...

Bikram Sues Donation Based Studio Yoga to the...
You know Bikram? He’s the yoga man who started the sweaty 105 degree yoga sequence. Now he is suing Yoga to the People, a donation based studio with locations in New York, San Francisco and Seattle. So I wrote about it for Business Insider. Read all about the lawsuit here. Also, about a year ago Details magazine wrote an interesting article about what goes on during Bikram’s...

The DMZ
Now that Kim Jong Il is dead I thought it would be most appropriate to share images of that time I stared at North Korea.  This is me, having a ball at the DMZ. Here are some tourists snapping photos of North Korea, land of barren trees. One is prohibited to take photos beyond the yellow line. The soldiers were there to enforce this rule, which I accidentally broke. This is North...

Cooking in the 1960s
I made this Brussels sprout pizza. Homemade dough topped with rosemary, thyme and sage infused olive oil, Parmesan cheese, garlic and roasted sprouts. I also make the best tacos in the world. No joke. Green chili corn tortillas, pinto beans, spicy sautéed mushrooms and onions with a homemade tomato hot sauce. Garnished with cilantro and lime of course.  Also, check this out - sautéed reindeer...

Before Facebook there was Purple Moon
There was a time when I enjoyed buying CD-ROM computer games packaged in cereal-sized boxes. And I had a good collection of computer games in my youth. These games gave me great experience (resumé worthy experience really) in the challenges and nuances of multiple careers. I have designed clothes for Barbie, have directed her in various independent short films, and have created my own teen...

Stinky Pinky
For the past three Thursdays, artists Quintessa Matranga and Hilde Lynn have been hosting Stinky Pinky, a performance art nail salon. Here are scenes from the Stinky Pinky debut: Hilde and Quin, and their glorious shiny blue table. Potpourri, cat statues and glitter galore. Quin, chatting with patrons. This is my hand. As you can see, the results are fabulous. Next Thursday is the last...

Gnomes
Ten years ago, June 24th 2001 to be exact, my friend Hannah Betterton and I read an article about garden gnomes in The New York Times. We fell in love with the hilarity of the article. One quote in particular has been engrained in my brain for the past ten years: “a gnome can’t help what he’s made of, and they all live very happily together in the garden.” Hannah and I cut...

Good news. I am now a K-Pop journalist for the website Seoul Beats. Read about his leave for the army here. Psy flaunting his muscles and the article on why his song is banned.

It Begins with Bibimbap
My first taste of Korean food was on the airplane - Asiana Air’s version of bibimbap. Sad, I know, but still exciting because it gave me a crash course in bibimbap before I arrived. They provided a guide on how to assemble (or what they call “mixing and harmonizing”) this quintessential Korean dish. Bibimbap is served deconstructed. There are many varieties, but typically it’s rice with a...

Jjimjilbang
My first full Korean day was spent at the Jjimjilbang (bathhouse) Dragon Hill Spa because I couldn’t imagine doing anything else in my jet lagged state. It proved to be the perfect jet lagged activity and only cost me 10,000 won. Dragon Hill Spa: The pleasant walk to the spa: I pranced around naked with Korean women and soaked in various large bathtubs. This was great because I have...

Arriving in Korea
Korea smells like fake fruit. Like fruit disinfectant wipes, or fruit scented Sanrio erasers. This is my first impression of the country and after spending a little over a week in this lovely place, I discover that it also often smells of mothballs and fermentation.     It’s also very green. When I looked out the airplane window and starred at Korea for the first time, all I could see was a lush...

Eating with Lulu: Part 2
Part 1 of my adventures with Lulu were posted a while ago, but I promised a sequel and will not fail to deliver. In the last installment we ventured to Flushing for Chinese food and nibbled on chocolate in Williamsburg. Lulu’s visit to New York also included a late night sidewalk picnic of Roberta’s pizzas in Bushwick. The chefs at Roberta’s, cooking up pies: Our White and...

Beets
I wrote an article on nature’s candy for Brooklyn Based. Below is an excerpt. Read the full story here and get a recipe from Brooklyn chef Kenneth Tufo for his Beet Tartare here. The formula is simple and its popularity...

WatchWatch
This documentary is a tribute to one of my favorite meals, the meatball. The meatball has played a very important role in my life, having been there for me on my Bat Mitzvah, my 21st Birthday, the night my cat died, and will hopefully be there for future monumental occasions such as my wedding and funeral. Meatballs are love. Love are meatballs. Meatballs for life. Enjoy.

Bon Voyage Breakfast
I’m in South Korea now, but before I left I had a charming breakfast with my roommates Matt Yoka and Eric Appell at Egg. We drew fantastic etchings on the paper tablecloth, enjoyed biscuits, grits and kale then completed our morning with an adorable goodbye photoshoot.  KOREA! KOREA! KOREA! Precious moments.  Bon Voyage Brooklyn. Korea updates soon.

SF Underground Market
My first visit to the SF Underground Market last year was a magical evening where my sister, father and I feasted on delicious pulled pork sliders, sweet potato tacos, chocolate cake with caramel sauce, and a whole roasted pig being carved up for Banh Mi sandwiches.  This weekend’s venture to the latest Underground Market at Public Works did not live up to my first experience, although the...

Passover Update
The Chozen ice cream arrived today. Matzoh crunch was a total let down. It was basically just your standard vanilla with some chocolate bits in it. I couldn’t find any matzoh in this ice cream. There were three other flavors to sample - all for various holidays. Continuing with the Passover theme there was Coconut Macaroon. It was meh. The Chocolate Gelt had a smooth consistency and was a...

Falafel
I was biking in the West Village today when a woman by the name of Susi Wunsch stopped to take my photo for her blog, velojoy. So that should be on her site soon. Exciting. She asked for my name, then asked where I was going. “To get falafel,” I said. Here’s evidence: This delicious falafel was brought to you by Taïm.

Mutations
This morning I poured myself a bowl of Peanut Butter Puffins cereal, and to my delight there was a mutant variety. As you can see on the right is the uniform version, and on the left the exciting mutation. And I must say the mutant was delicious. Generally this cereal has more of a corn taste than a peanut butter flavor, which I do enjoy. But this blob was like a mushy peanut butter goo. It also...

Cheap Smokes
A pack of New York City cigarettes are the most expensive in the country, but addicts are turning to the black market for cheaper smokes. Read story below or on City Beats.
