This summer I want to go camping. And when I go camping I want to sleep in a slice of pizza and rest my head on a piece of broccoli. From B Fiber Craft and Emporium on Etsy.

That Fence on Valencia at 19th
Monica Schaefer is always well dressed. Ask her where she found her oversized black jacket reminiscent of Comme des Garcons ($5), her blue stripped sundress ($3), or Navajo print boots ($7) and the answer is always the same. She bought them off a fence. Cesar Arroyo is cleaning out the basement for his wife’s friend by selling her unwanted goods right outside his sister’s house on 19th St. “I...

DECADES: DESIGN HEAVY: SAM CULKINS OF CULK INK.... →
decadesmagazine: Self-made man Samuel Culkins resides in the Avenues of fog beach town San Francisco where out of his 23rd and Cabrillo garage the Bay Area via Rhode Island designer wields his craft. Bent on 80’s surf and skate imagery, Culk’s boyish tendencies lend themselves to compelling combinations of vintage playboy mag imagery and Dionysian ideals of California mythology.  Read Sky...

The Kinkade Taco
Earlier this month I mourned the loss of Thomas Kinkade with a screen-printed (chocolate) Kinkade Taco. His glowing paintings of gnome villages, thunder storms, rainbows and overly-attentive deer will be missed.

Mary-Kate & Ashley
I am currently working on a memoir about the time I cruised the Baltic sea with the Olsen twins. Reflecting on my Olsen obsession, I’ve become nostalgic for the forgotten but amazing Olsen twin products from the early aughts. I used to subscribe to their glossy magazine, which came out in 2001. Sadly there were only around three issues.

Mission Night Market
Thursday night, shortly after my root canal, I went shopping at the Mission Night Market at the Ken Ken Ramen noodle factory.  I purchased a pair of earrings from Oak and Roma made by artist Jazzmin Atento. They are made from recycled leather and moss from the Marin headlands. Other sights from the market - Quin and Hilde painting nails in an old boat and Charles Papillo encouraging people to...

Homemade
Not long ago I made my own Cheez-Its. Now I am moving on to try other well know packaged goods. This New York Times story, It’s Not Junk If I Made It, serves as inspiration. To try: Oreo Cookies, Ho-Hos and Fritos. I’ll start with this Oreo recipe from Breads and Roses.  Results soon.

Gold Tips
I bought this blouse at Zara in November. I have been obsessed with it ever since. Originally it was purchased to wear to a very important interview.  The shirt was complimented during said interview, but did not lead to much success otherwise. I wore it to Betelnut one night resulting in sprinkles of grease on the front. Don’t worry, dry cleaning took care of the mess. What else can I...

Degrassi Death
The death of Degrassi Junior High star, Neil Hope, is so odd and mysterious. He died in 2007, but his corpse went unidentified by his family for four years. His death was formally announced to the public this month. Hope’s character on the show, Derek “Wheels” Wheeler, was interesting. He had a mullet. He was in the band Zit Remedy with Joey and Snake. His parents were killed...

Decades, the magazine I edit with Sky Madden and Elizabeth Brown, is having a party. It’s our first event to celebrate the anticipation of our debut issue (to be released this Spring). Stolen Bike
I have been compared to Pee-Wee Herman numerous times, for both my personality and hairstyle. And now, like Pee-Wee, I have been the victim of bike thievery. Today, February 15th, 2012, at around 11:40 a.m., my bike was stolen. She was locked outside the San Francisco Public Library in the Civic Center. She’s a black Linus mixte, three speed, with fenders and a front black basket. She is...

Cheez-Its
Last night I cooked some homemade Cheez-Its using this recipe from Chicagoist. The fresh-from-the-oven crackers are clearly superior to the boxed variety. There are plans for my magazine Decades to sell homeade Cheez-It’s at our upcoming party. Shaped like triangles, of course. We are scheming to make gourmet Cheez-Its with Gruyère, and a spicy variety with Sriracha called “Pigeon...

Orthorexia Nervosa
For my masters project at Columbia I wrote about the eating disorder orthorexia nervosa, the unhealthy obsession with healthy eating. It was published this week on Health.com. Naturally I spent a lot of time editing this story while eating Oreo cookie cake at the Cake Shop in the Lower East Side. An excerpt: Alena’s obsession with healthy eating started in 12th grade, when she found...

The DMZ
Now that Kim Jong Il is dead I thought it would be most appropriate to share images of that time I stared at North Korea.  This is me, having a ball at the DMZ. The soldiers were there to enforce this rule, which I accidentally broke. This is North...

Ten years ago, June 24th 2001 to be exact, my friend Hannah Betterton and I read an article about garden gnomes in The New York Times. We fell in love with the hilarity of the article. It Begins with Bibimbap
My first taste of Korean food was on the airplane - Asiana Air’s version of bibimbap. Sad, I know, but still exciting because it gave me a crash course in bibimbap before I arrived. They provided a guide on how to assemble (or what they call “mixing and harmonizing”) this quintessential Korean dish. Bibimbap is served deconstructed. There are many varieties, but typically it’s rice with a...

Arriving in Korea
Korea smells like fake fruit. Like fruit disinfectant wipes, or fruit scented Sanrio erasers. This is my first impression of the country and after spending a little over a week in this lovely place, I discover that it also often smells of mothballs and fermentation.     It’s also very green. When I looked out the airplane window and starred at Korea for the first time, all I could see was a lush...
