1. Gnomes

Ten years ago, June 24th 2001 to be exact, my friend Hannah Betterton and I read an article about garden gnomes in The New York Times. We fell in love with the hilarity of the article. One quote in particular has been engrained in my brain for the past ten years: “a gnome can’t help what he’s made of, and they all live very happily together in the garden.”

Hannah and I cut out the photos from the article along with some choice quotes. We made a collage. The collage has since been misplaced. Ten years have gone by and I still think about this story. The gnomes, they haunt me really. And Hannah and I have shared a gnome connection ever sense. When I see a gnome I think of Hannah and a few years ago I bought Hannah her very own gnome.

I finally had the sense to Google the article. To my delight I found it! Now I share it with you, The World; Twilight in the Land of the Gnomes, and this photo of a gnome I found in Portland, Oregon.
